Clinical Excellence Awards 2012 - England and Wales
Dear Colleague,
Applications to ACCEA for consideration in the 2012 round of National Higher Awards in England and Wales
It is at this time of the year when ALS seeks to support members of the ALS in their applications to the higher award scheme.
Unfortunately we do not know whether the 2012 round will proceed for new applicants. I attach a letter from the Chair and Medical Director of ACCEA dated 19th May 2011 which is self-explanatory. It is very likely, that if continued in 2012, awards will be fewer (and therefore much more competitive) in the present financial situation. However, colleagues need to be aware that the Higher Award system may be closed to new applicants in the 2012 round (which is the unfortunate situation that has occurred in Scotland and Northern Ireland).
The results of the 2011 round should be announced in late August. However, the process of determining those colleagues who receive ALS support has to start before this time in order to be complete and transparent. If the 2012 round does continue for new applicants, then we expect it to follow the process of the 2011 round. ALS would be able to support colleagues directly for national Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. ALS cannot give direct support to candidates for Platinum awards, but can indirectly influence the process through input into the Colleges and the Association of Surgeons.
As a guideline we would emphasise some unwritten rules.
- You are unlikely to get an award within the first 10 years of appointment as a Consultant
- You are unlikely to achieve a higher award without the full support of the Chief Executive of your Trust. In addition you should have already obtained 5 or 6 local awards.
- You are unlikely to receive a higher national award within 5 years of your present national award.
- We at ALS will wish to support those who have contributed significantly to the success of our organisation, as well as those who have demonstrated exceptional work in research and teaching at national level.
We would wish to give potential applicants enough time to complete their application forms for consideration by the ALS. We attach copies of the 2012 application forms (A, D, E, F). If you intend to submit for 2012 and wish to seek ALS support, can I ask you to electronically return the appropriate completed forms to Jenny Treglohan (Jenny@asgbi.org.uk) in the ALS office by midnight on Sunday 14 August 2011 Forms received after this deadline will not be considered. For further assistance with the completion of the attached forms, please visit http://www.dh.gov.uk/ab/ACCEA/index.htm
Can I also remind you that the responsibility for submitting your application appropriately and on time to ACCEA rests entirely with you, the applicant. If you are successful in receiving ALS support then ALS will be responsible for submitting your citation of support. However you will need to submit your application to ACCEA at least 7 days before the ACCEA stated closing date to enable the ALS office to upload your ALS citation onto your application on the ACCEA website.
Best wishes
