ALTS (Association of Laparoscopic Theatre Staff)

Welcome from the ALTS Chair

The Annual Scientific Meeting is returning to the UK this year after a resounding success in Cork last year: I think we can safely say a good time was had by all. It was a pleasure to meet a lot of the Irish delegates who had come to the meeting for the first time, and hopefully we will see them again this year. This is the first time the meeting will be held in Central London, and we are optimistic that there will again be something for everyone. London is also very easy to get to from most places.

There will be live surgery from Guildford along with 3D HD transmission from MATTU based at The Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford; this promises to be an excellent session and will be cutting- edge, pardon the pun!

As usual there is an “A” list of speakers who will share their experiences in laparoscopic surgery with us. It is always interesting to listen to different surgeons, and how they deal with challenging situations.

The ALSGBI supports team training and does a first class job of keeping their costs down and heavily supporting theatre practitioners by keeping costs to the absolute minimum. Where else can you attend a first-class training event for 2 days for as little as £100?

Thursday will be a day of live operating, we are covering a wide variety of specialties, featuring, of course, the 3D HD surgery. It promises to be a lively and interactive session with something for everyone. On the Friday we have constructed a slightly different session for ALTS delegates whilst introducing some topics that theatre practitioners find of interest: in fact we often have some of the surgeons present too! Although of course, as is always the case, you are free to go to any session that you wish. ALTS delegates often mix and match, attending sessions that interest them from both programmes.

A number of bursaries have been made available to ALTS members, generously supported by SIGH (Surgical Instrument Group Holdings Ltd). This is the fourth year SIGH have given us this fantastic opportunity and we are most appreciative of their continuing support.

Hope to see you all in London – save the dates 14 and 15 November!
